How to get a Motorcycle License

Illinois Motorcycle Licensing Rules

To legally ride a motorcycle in the state of Illinois, you may obtain either a Class M or a Class L Instruction Permit that’s valid for up to 12 months.

The Class L permit is for riders of scooters and motor-driven cycles of less than 150cc displacement. The Class M permit means that you can ride a motorcycle with any displacement over 150cc. With the Class M license you can pretty much ride anything with a motor.

In order to obtain either of these permits, you must be at least 18 years old. If you have an Illinois driver’s license, you can probably skip the written exam, but if you don’t, you’ll have to get a valid license. All riders will have to take a written motorcycle knowledge exam. Remember to bring your Illinois driver’s license, proof of residency, permit application, and applicable fee.

To get a permanent motorcycle license, you’re required to pass an Illinois Department of Transportation Motorcycle Safety Course. You can prepare by studying the Motorcycle Operator Manual and by taking practice tests, both available through the Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles.

Finally, if you take a Motorcycle Rider Education Course, you may waive the written and driving test portion of the licensing process. If you take this class, you may also qualify for discounted insurance.
